Paul Yandell Duo-Tron Neck Universal Mount

  • Paul Yandell Duo-Tron - neck - Universal Mount

Developed with Chet Atkins in mind by master fingerpicker and Chet’s best friend, Mr. Paul Yandell. The Paul Yandell Duo-Tron is a unique tonal experience, infusing steel blades and screws as pole pieces in opposite positions on the pickups. This provides exceptional string to string note separation and supplies a whole new character to the sound.

    Tone/Characteristics

The Duo-Tron's proprietary design combines blades and pole screws to highlight the response of the magnet. The blades provide a bigger note and are well-suited for finger-picking styles. The player won't lose any sensitivity bending the treble strings and will notice a fuller, bolder response that affects both sound - and equally important – feel. The bass side dials in a tone directly reminiscent of Ray’s original Filter’Tron - but with a touch more dynamic attack that is a little more focused and rounded.

    Installation:

The Universal Mount is a direct drop-in replacement for standard sized Filter'trons - with and without "ears" or “clips”. This pickup comes with two pieces of compression rubber, 2 mounting (wood) screws, and the Universal Mount Clip Pack which includes everything you will need to mount the pickups to your ring or pickguard. Please refer to the Tech Specs tab to learn more.

  • Output/Power

DC Resistance is not entirely an indicator of true pickup output, although it can be helpful.

    Bridge: DCR - 7.6k / Inductance - 2.97H

    Neck: DCR - 4.0k / Inductance - 1.60H

    Wiring Notes

This pickup is shipped with 4-conductor wire but is ready for standard 2-conductor connection. The extra red and green wires come soldered together and taped off - to split coils, send these to ground.

Splitting coils is generally not recommended with the Duo-Tron due to low coil output, although some may enjoy it. Additionally, the 4-Conductor wire is convenient for custom switching i.e. pickups combined in series or parallel.

    Helpful Notes

Filter'tron Replacement: The Universal Mount is a direct drop in replacement for Vintage Filter'trons, HS Filter'trons, Fideli'trons, Mega'trons, Full’trons and any other standard sized 'Trons (including our old No Ears & English Mount). Blacktop Filter'trons require one Dual Screw Mount Adapter per pickup in order to attach to their stock rings. When replacing Broad'trons and Gretsch-Buckers, you will need a new EM2 Ring.

Post-2012 Electromatics: One Dual Screw Mount Adapter per pickup will be necessary to mount our Universal Mount pickups to your stock ring.

Streamliners: These guitars are made with "Gibson-style" rings instead of standard Gretsch rings. You will want to choose either our EM1 or EM2 Ring to replace these when installing a Universal Mount Pickup (this depends on which style you prefer). If you choose the EM2 Gretsch Style Ring you will also want a pack of Ring Risers.

Gretsch 5120/5122: New Rings and Ring Risers are necessary for this guitar due to it's high neck angle. You can find those in our Products section.

Pre-2012 Pro Jets: These will require some specific modification in order to install Universal Mount pickups. You can refer to our Pro Jet Resource Page which is in the Resources section.

Humbucker Replacement: To replace standard Humbuckers, pair this Universal Mount with one of our EM1 (Gibson-style), EM2 (Gretsch), or EM4 (Fender-style) rings.

The delivery was quick and I like the industrial velvet finish
Haven’t finished the build yet so I can’t comment on the sound
But can hardly wait!

The very best pickups.

The TV Jones, Paul Yandell, pickups and turned my
Washburn J7 into the most beautiful sounding guitar that I cold have ever dreamed of. Thank you to the folks at TV Jones for the great products and wonderful service; and of course, a belated thanks to the late Paul Yandell for all of his hard work and this project.

Balance and Poise

An imbalanced sound can make an otherwise good guitar unlistenable. We've all heard it; highs that are piercing and borderline painful or lows that become indistinct and mired. The Duo-Tron design addresses these issues in a manner that can only be achieved by the unique design of these pickups.

The blade of a Supertron gives greater voice than individual pole-pieces without the darkening effect of more winds on the coil. Individual pole-pieces, conversely, soften the notes slightly in comparison to the Supertron's bars. By strengthening the lows of the bridge pickup and the highs of the neck pickup, the Duo-Tron bridge is designed to achieve an unusual degree of balance between the highest and lowest note.

At the time of this writing, I have had significant experience with only the bridge Duo-Tron, so I will confine my comments to it.

By having blades on the treble side of a bridge pickup, the lower three strings are accentuated while the upper three strings are cooled down just enough to avoid the "icepick" effect which can occur on the highest notes. The lower notes are powerful and clear while the upper notes are twangy, but not unrestrained.

The overall effect is an unusual degree of balance. I recorded a Surf tune using the bridge Duo-Tron on my G-6119-1959 and the balance was stellar. The lower notes were powerful, yet retained their full definition. The upper register notes (well above the 12th fret of the 1st string) were powerful without being overpowering. The result was very close to something you'd hear on a classic Surf track from the '60s.

Excellent pickup!

Replaced a TV Jones Powertron in my RS Guitarworks Rockabilly Jr. with the DuoTron due to a bit too many mids with the Powertron. The DuoTron has plenty of guts but has more of the twang I wanted. Plenty of bold snap on the bass strings and nicely balanced with the treble strings. Just what I was hoping for!
