We get a lot of calls from folks who want to improve the sound of their Gretsch Pro-Jet by replacing the stock Gretsch mini-humbuckers with TV Jones pickups. The level of difficulty of this mod is somewhat high. Not terribly difficult, but it does require many steps. We’ll go through each step with accompanying photos.

Step 1.
Measure neck cavity depth.
Some of the newer Jet pickup cavities are shallower than other models.
The neck pickup cavity may need to be routed if it is at 1/2″ depth.

Step 2.
Measure the bridge cavity.
With the bridge cavity depth at 7/16″, a short bridge pickup is needed.

Step 3.
If necessary, route the neck cavity to proper depth.

Step 4.
Check the depth of the neck pickup.
The top of the pickup should be level with the pickup ring.

Step 5.
Insert the bottom shim into bridge cavity.
This is needed so the mounting screws have something to bite into.

Step 6.
Screw bottom shims into bridge and neck cavities. Then wire-up your pickups.

Step 7.
Place compression rubber over the bottom wooden shims.
These are needed for fine height adjustment.

Step 8.
Make sure both pickups are centered with both E strings before the
pickup mounting screws are installed.

Step 9.
Use pin vise with .078″ drill to drill pilot holes for mounting screws.
Notice angle of drill bit — Perpendicular to E stings for proper pickup angle.
Screw in the mounting screws.

Step 10.
Screw in the side filler-blocks.
Use mounting screws from stock pickups to mount filler blocks.

Pickup ring mounting screws will now have something to bite into.

Step 11.
Install pickup rings.

Step 12.
String it up!

  1. I hope you can help me, I want to buy a Gretsch G5248T Electromatic Double Jet, but the only thing stopping me is this:
It will be possible to do a split coil on these mini humbuckers? know something about it?
put a switch to get the best of both worlds (and sigle coil humbuckers) ?

    thanks and greetings

  2. You wouldn’t want to split the coils on those stock pickups. It would sound really bad.

  3. Does this apply to all mini-humbuckers, or just those found in the Gretsch? Thanks!

  4. what type of pickups does the baritone guitar wear? thank you

  5. Which baritone? TV Jones C-Melody Spectra Sonic wears a TV Classic Bridge and Magnatron Neck.

  6. Would these directions hold true if I wanted to drop in your P-90 pickups in an Electromatic Pro Jet? As well as the T Armond pickups?

  7. Can I wear a set of T-Armond’s in my Pro Jet too?

  8. From the pic it doesnt look like you bought the pickups that come with mounts on them. Did you just buy the pickups without mounts? I’m looking to do the same thing with my Pro Jet. Sorry if this question is a dumb one.

  9. My Electromatic Pro Jet is a Pre-Fender model with the larger (Gretschbuckers?) pickups.. Would it have the same setup as the 5120? Thanks!

  10. can you also make this mod using the “PowerTron” pickups?

  11. This might be a dumb question, but how do you “route” something? im not to familiar with doing that and if i got these pups i would want to do it right and not screw it up. anybody want to explain it to me? ha.

  12. @ivan sanz: splitting would sound bad, yes. But in case you were wondering, this how-to also applies to the double-jet, since the double jet and the pro jet use the same mini-humbucker pickups (according to what I’ve read).

  13. routing is pretty much a fancy word for vertically shaving a hole in something, if you don’t know what routing is you probably wanna take your guitar to a shop since you need a router drill and there is a certain skill level involved, go too deep or crooked and you got a whole new set of problems you gotta fix before being able to set this stuff properly. plus if you bring all the parts and guitar to a shop they’ll charge you for labor only, this job shouldn’t be more than 50 bucks.

  14. Which pick ups would you go for in a G5265 Jet Baritone? The more twang, the merrier:) It says somewhere that the original mini humbuckers are yours, but weren’t those in a different model?

  15. What do you have to do as far as hooking up the pick ups. Do you have to solder and if so is it difficult?
